JOULUKALENTERI 2013

J.Ahola Official Street Team ylpeänä esittää / J.Ahola Official Street Team proudly presents:
J.AHOLAN MUSIIKKIJOULUKALENTERI 2013 / J.AHOLA’S MUSICAL ADVENT CALENDAR 2013

---
In spite of his tight schedule leading to Christmas, J has kindly agreed to create an Advent calendar exclusively for the Street Team. This year when you open the doors there are songs with a small story, of course. J has not necessarily written the songs himself, but he has been involved, one way or another. And here you go, the first door is ready to open!

MINÄ USKON: Tilkkutäkki 3
(By Simojoki/Kaskinen)

---
In 2007, after two Teräbetoni studio albums when we decided it was time to take a little break from gigs, I was asked to sing on the third Tilkkutäkki album; a series of albums that had been rather successful. I had no idea of what it was all about, but since there was a lump sum promised, I agreed to sing. To my surprise the song turned out to be quite a declaration of faith, Minä uskon. Never mind, a singer sings, a composer composes, a player plays, an actor acts etc.

My version is lazy and rakish in a nice way. For the first time my rendition is something different, low and calm. And just for your information: the only real instrument is the banjo, or whatever it is."

Heh.
---
Now that the headlines here in Finland have been pretty Cheek-oriented (a Finnish rap artist), I guess it's time for me to recall the time I was asked to sing on Jare Tiihonen's upcoming album in 2009. I was informed that song I was about participate on was to be called "Jää", and I got the backing track and lyrics few days before the recording date. I was a bit confused that there was no melody line for me, but I thought they'd play it for me in the studio.

So, when the zero hour arrived, the artist himself came to pick me up with his (then already) pretty fancy car and he seemed to be very nice young man. When I told him I liked his car, he said that he had bought it for himself personally but also for the gigs he was doing with two other guys. Handy and cost-effective, I was thinking to myself, since playing in a heavy band makes the car demands greater, you need a bigger car  'cause of the crew and the backline.

The studio that was booked for the vocal sessions was somewhere in the back of Tampere around the industrial area. The warehouse like premises contained a vocal booth where I was directed to. Then I realized that these guys represent totally different outlook on music and composing for example: the song didn't have a melodyline I was about sing, but I had to make it myself! While singing it, I was doing it. So, if you think it's not that imaginative, please forgive me, but I couldn't come up with anything else under the pressure and the time I was given. Hah.”

DREAMTALE: "FLY"

---
In 2003, or was it 2004, I was asked to sing in the band Dreamtale. It was and is a power metal band from Tampere. Their music was not really my cup of tea, because the band was borrowing strong musical influences from other similar bands of the time. Still I thought I should see what I can create with them. The guys seemed rather enthusiastic about their thing  and that was a big bonus (since it seems to be quite hard to find anything like that around oneself these days).

At some point the guys started bringing new songs to the training sessions, and as I wrote songs too, I offered a few songs to the album. I was indeed allowed to record the songs, but it turned out to be more of an exercise of trying to commit me, since, cough, I "was allowed" to play the guitars to the songs.

One song I wrote to the album was called "Fly". For a long time I had wanted to write a song with Oriental feel, and since I was also listening to quite lot of prog rock, also those influences can be heard in the song as rhythmic gimmicks and diversity.

I still like the song in many ways, but of course, it could have been done even better, and the arrangement might have benefited from some extra time.”

RUASTE: ”VIIMEISEN KERRAN”

”Tampereella on useita raskaampaa musiikkia soittavaa bändejä, ja aika usein ihmiset vähintäänkin tietävät toisensa ja melkein jonkun tuntee paremmin bändien riveistä. AHOLAa äänittävä Jussi Kulomaa soittaa esimerkiksi Masterstroke-nimisessä pumpussa ja ainakin bändin rumpalilla sekä laulaja/kitaristilla on toinenkin yhteinen projekti: "Ruaste".

Minua pyydettiin Ruasteen Nuottiöljyy-levylle fiittaamaan kappaleeseen ”Viimeisen kerran”. Aika vihaista settiä tuosta tuli.
Punkin ja hevin rajamailla tässä liikutaan. Tuoli heilahtaa!

There are several bands in Tampere that play heavier music, and quite often people at least know about each other and many times you know someone a bit better from each band. For example Jussi Kulomaa, who is recording the upcoming AHOLA-album, plays keyboard in a band called Masterstroke, and at least the drummer and vocalist/guitarist have another project called "Ruaste".

I was asked to sing on their album "Nuottiöljyy" on a song "Viimeisen kerran". I think the outcome sounds quite angry, and the style is somewhere in between punk and heavy rock. Tuoli heilahtaa!”

COSMIC SPELL: ”GUILTY”

----
Cosmic Spell is a project that annoyingly never really started, but we made few demos when we occasionally got a chance to meet and play. "Guilty" is based on a riff by Ville Terämä (by then Lehtinen) that you can hear in the beginning and during the chorus. I built this pretty neat song around it and you can hear the influence of Glenn Hughes here (also in the band's name which is a song title by GH): heavy rock and funky touch.

In 2003 my voice sounds pretty bright and Heikki "Hessu Maxx" Ahonen is showing promise as rock drummer. I played the guitar and the keyboards, and you can actually say that this is the first real mix I ever did. And I think it sound pretty fine! All in all you can hear the joy of creating something and the eagerness to try something new. I couldn't practically play keyboards at all, but when you knew what you wanted, you could play something that fits the song pretty nicely. The guitar solos are played, no-one else than, Timo Niemistö that you can hear also at the church concerts going on right now.”

ANTHRIEL: ”CIRCLE OF LIFE”

Kappaleesta tuli "Circle Of Life", jossa koitin heittäytyä vähän filosofisemmaksi lyriikoissani, sillä olihan kyseessä bändi, joka ei myöskään soita mitään helppoa materiaalia.
----
Anthriel lead by Timo Niemistö is one of music's hidden gems and there's reason to hope that many, many more people eventually find this ambitious band. A few years ago the guys of Anthriel asked me to fill in during one gig at the Sauna Open Air in Tampere. From this spawned thought that I could help them finish a song that had to be ready for their collection album fast - like yesterday.

The song was "Circle Of Life", where I tried to aim for deeper philosophy in the lyrics. After all, Anthriel is a band that does not play anything simple. The vocal track of the song was partly improvised on the spot and partly melody that just came while writing the lyrics. Timo recorded, directed, encouraged and so forth! On the keyboards you hear Antti Hakulinen who joins me on the Christmas tour, the drummer is a true metal musician Jari Kuokkanen and on the bass virtuoso is Klaus Wirzenius. He even has a great last name! ;) ”

RASKAAMPAA JOULUA: ”EN ETSI VALTAA LOISTOA”

---
In 2006 I joined in the production of the second album in the Raskasta joulua series, this was called Raskaampaa joulua. There were a lot of other musicians, too, like Tony Kakko and Marco Hietala. Nowadays they are just Toni and Marko, but lets get back to business: how exciting! I felt I had taken a step forward on my career when I was asked to sing on the same album with such famous and competent fellows!

Erkka Korhonen produced the album and I was given quite a free hand with my renditions; the arrangement is mainly mine, too. I think Erkka was slightly wet behind the ears in his role as a producer, but that is the recipe for all sorts of wild and different things. It was somewhat questionable whether one is allowed to phrase a song of Jean Sibelius this way and whether one should scream such high notes. Well, why not? There was a certain feeling to it, and this is not your basic version of the song, but it has some edge and it's not the most tired either, hah.

The same thing happened in fact later, too, when I started to sing Ave Maria on gigs and sang the repeat one octave higher. In the back room discussions we wondered if it is too much, and maybe the audience wondered too - who knows. The song IS dignified and heartfelt. Later Marco started singing Ave Maria the same way and I imported the idea onto my own Christmas album, too. It is good to tear down small, often imagined border fences which are even perceived as being of different heights by different groups of people.”

Me vaadimme METALLIA!

---
The second album of Teräsbetoni was started in a hurry, since the success of our band was so fast and furious. The first album was made in armylike circumstances at the studio of Anssi Kippo. The band shared one room, where we slept in bunk beds and listened to the other guys farting. This time the album was done in Helsinki with a more flexible budget. But choosing the first single was really difficult. The record company wished for a new angle, but we were just getting started. Me vaadimme METALLIA!

I had written a song I thought was good, it was called Älä mene metsään, but when we voted, it was about to be left out from the album, and this did not make me a very happy camper. Unexpectedly a higher level requested that Älä mene metsään should be the first single of our new album! What? I did think the song was good and would fit in well into the album, but I never saw it as a single. After quick negotiations we started working on the song. It turned out good, so that was not a problem, but I guess it was something quite different than what the audience wanted. Luckily the second single Vaadimme metallia did get some more attention. It should have been the first single."

SAURUXET: ”KUNNIAKSI DINOJEN”

”SauruXet, bändi jonka tarina jäi vähän lyhyeksi johtuen oikeudellisista syistä levy-yhtiön ja artistin välillä. Yhden levyn ehtivät nämäkin vihreät liskot tehdä ja minulta pyydettiin tarjolle kappaleita. Kaksi kokonaista ja yksi puolikas levylle päätyi. Niistä ehkä onnistunein on kappale "Kunniaksi dinojen". Suurta on, ja äänittivät vielä lapsikuoronkin taustalle. Vaikka en asiasta itse mitään isommin tiedäkään, niin toivottavasti Pangea-nimi herätti joissain lapsissa mielenkiintoa ja kenties tiedonhakuakin.
---
SauruXet, a band that's tale was left a bit short because of the legal issues between the label and the artist. They managed to make one record before that though, and I was asked to offer some songs as well. Two whole songs and one half made it to the album. I guess the "Kunniaksi dinojen" sounds the best of them. It's quite grand and the guys also recorded a child choir in the end of the song. A cherry in the pie. And even though I don't really know about the issue myself, I hope that some kids found the name Pangea interesting and searched more info.”

NORTHERN KINGS: ”MY WAY”

”Raskaan joulun kautta osiltaan syntynyt "laulukunkut"-projekti Northern Kings on mielenkiintoinen tapaus.

Toiselle NK-levylle halusin versioida akustisilla keikoillani tutuksi tulleen My Wayn. I did it my way!
---
Partly born from Raskasta joulua-project, Northern Kings is an interesting case. I got to write some arrangements of songs I've always wanted to do and there was also a song that I really didn't want to do, but the arrangement was so good that it was worth doing in the end (it's not this song, though). Northern Kings must have had most hits on Youtube of any project I've been involved with, but for a reason or another it has never shown on record sales. Of course, the first album sold gold and the second very nicely as well, but is it maybe the poor availability on certain countries that has affected the state of  things? Maybe so.

I wanted to do a version of My Way on the second NK-album, since I had gotten pretty familiar with it on my duo gigs. I wanted to stay as true as possible on the original (well, what is the original?...), but since we were doing a heavy project I wanted to add some Tony Iommi and Black Sabbath vibe on it. So, the song starts and ends on heavily pounding riff that plays on the spirit of those metal pioneers. I also wanted the song to have this Heaven And Hellish beat, but since it was already used on another song, it had to be altered a bit. It's kinda shame if you think about the big picture, but it works well anyway. I did it my way!”

AGNES PIHLAVA: ”DON’T FALL IN LOVE”

”Vuosikymmenen molemmin puolin tein, sattuneesta syystä, aika paljon biisejä. Intoakin oli etenkin alkuun varsin paljon, mutta turha duuni alkaa kyllä käydä hermoille, varsinkin kun aikaa on rajattu määrä käytössä vuorokaudessa eikä demoja tehdä hetkessä. Yksi noista demoista oli Don’t Fall In Love.

---
At the turn of the decade I wrote, for a reason, quite a lot of songs. Especially in the beginning I was really excited about it, but working for nothing starts to get on the nerves, especially since there are a limited number of hours in a day and demos take their time. One of the demos at the time was Don't Fall In Love.

A certain hair metal band, that later gained some fame, had just been "found" and I was asked to provide some material for them. At the time I did not really know what kind of a band it was exactly and so I just wrote a heavy rock song I thought was catchy. The songs just start to carry themselves at some point. And that is what is best in writing songs, it can even be a surprise to yourself when you notice where the song takes you.

Anyway, it turned out my song was not of right style. A bit later Agnes, of Idols fame, started work on her second album, and since someone I know asked me to, I sent in a couple of demos. The artist liked Don't Fall In Love and the song is on her album. Although her performance has its moments, somehow it is still lacking the "thing" that was on my demo.”

ARI KOIVUNEN: ”STAY TRUE”

Tulee mieleen jotenkin The Beatles. Yhtä kaikki, silivuplee!
---
Since we started on Idols, let's go on with Stay True from the first album by Ari Koivunen. An acquaintance from the record company asked for a song to the album and Stay True took form reasonably fast. In fact I like this song quite a bit. It has a rather demanding but exciting melody in the verse. Also C-part gets points from me, personally. Somehow it reminds me of The Beatles. All the same, silivuplee!”

Harvemmin tulee naurettua kippurassa studion lattialla sillä tavalla.

Kappaleen lopetus on mielestäni omaa luokkaansa.
---
The making of Teräsbetoni’s third album was all in all a good experience. The songs came out fast and painless, action in the studio was quick and there was lots of fun, especially recording backing vocals and extra blabber of which remind about this day’s song, Painajainen.

The song opens with such extra voices which indicate warriors sleeping and seeing nightmares. After that Jari “Härski” Kuokkanen starts his merciless drum fill, that isn’t one of the easy ones. In the bridge parts those extra utterances (that our producer Hiilesmaa called “the voices like an a**rape”) can also be heard, and making those screams was so much fun. It’s rare that while in the vocal booth, you’re laughing on the floor unable to continue.

The ending of the song is quite something else. If my memory serves me right, the scream is longer than in song Pyhä maa. The sound scape is mixed quite full, so it’s possible that the scream gets almost inaudible.”

COSMIC SPELL: ”POLES APART”

Rokkia!
---
Cosmic Spell’s second demo is overall tighter than the first one. This time I did all the guitars with Tokai’s Stratocaster copy and you can totally hear it on the sound. After all I had to find that at least this guitar individual was a Monday piece when it came to tuning. But you could always do a one demo with (to really find out what’s the guitar all about). The drums were recorded, if I recall right, at the rehearsing premises and the rest of the instruments through the modeling amp at home.

I haven’t heard this song in ages either, but what the hell: it works well, there’s lots of nice ideas and daring to do things with the skills everyone had at the time. Mr. Maxx plays his drums here audibly tighter than on the first recording. Rock’n’roll!”

DIABLO: ”TRAIL OF KINGS”

---
Some time ago a certain Heikki Malmberg whose talents were obvious already at a young age, played in my band called Bulldozer. Or actually it was Kim Högberg's band but I suppose my input was also significant.

However that was, years later I noticed that Heikki played drums in the band Diablo, and he played them well. Later I was asked to sing background vocals on their album and one of the songs was Trail Of Kings. I was rewarded for my efforts with a six pack of beer. I started to drink the beer already during the recording session and Rainer was worried I'll blow my part. Sounds quite rock'n'roll, doesn't it? Tuple Salmela was there too.”

AHOLA: ”I WALK ALONE”

“AHOLA syntyi hitaasti, mutta biisit vielä hitaammin. I Walk Alone syntyi jo vuonna 2008.

Kaikki lähti muuten Is This Love -soinnusta ;)

Että löytäkää nyt AHOLA jo.
Musiikkimme on ns. hyvää.
---
AHOLA found it’s form slowly but the songs formed at an even slower pace. I Walk Alone is from 2008. Things in my life were not as good as they could have been and, as a whole, Stoneface is rather a somber album, but as they say, art is suffering. I think Sibelius himself said that… but it doesn’t mean that life should be. Creating art is just so bloody hard that the process makes one suffer. And finding an audience to listen to your music is another story. But I guess Sibelius never had that problem.

For a long time I had thought it would be nice to write a 6/8 slow song, which would, however, be nothing to dance cheek to cheek. This turned into I Walk Alone, one of the best songs I've ever written. And it all started with Is This Love -chord ;)

So please, go and find AHOLA already. Our music is what they call good.”

---
This is the song that started everything for me. In 2003 one evening ended with a decision of a name to our band and then of course we needed songs for this same band. I immediately said I want to write the song bearing the name of the band and I already heard echoes of what was to come in my mind. I wanted to crystallize my idea of the music we would create in the future, although in reality we did not have a clue of what was to come. But hey, things went to the right direction, almost surprisingly so, as if things followed a manuscript. Teräsbetoni was born!”

PISPALASSA JYTÄÄ: ”HENGITÄ, SISKO”

“Sain muutama vuosi sitten puhelun Mikko Alatalon pojalta Kallelta.
---
I got a call from Mikko Alatalo’s son Kalle a few years back.
He was inquiring if I’d be interested in taking part in a record where singers do their versions of Coitus Int. songs. And I was, for sure. I had a choice between two songs: Per Vers, Runoilija and Hengitä, Sisko. The latter, rocking one sounded better for me and into the studio we went. The recordings took place at JJ-Studio in Tampere and the specialty of the studio, especially nowadays, is that it’s fully analog.  Everything went smoothly, all in all. The song writer Mikko Alatalo was at the studio as well and he told me that “The song, it’s about **cking!” And I tried to find something more…thoughtful :D”

J.AHOLA: ”DON’T FORGET THE MORNING”

:D). Kuunnelkaas pois!
---
This song is, for me, one of the best songs I did on my earlier demo phase (before Teräsbetoni, you know). I think we (me, Hessu and Ville) captured some essential moods and tones, which make me appreciate the music of, say, the 70’s. It’s harder to phrase what those things actually are. Somehow the players are spontaneous, but yet the song is strong and original enough to carry all that stuff we’re doing “on it”, for example the bass is more into bass soloing than playing the conventional lines (hello Ville! :D). Listen to yourself!”

JANI & JETSETTERS – J.AHOLA: “ROVIOLLA”

---
Let's return for a moment to songs written to others, the difference here being that someone unknown has loaded also the demo version of this song to the amazing world of internet - who knows where that person got it. Roviolla was written after a request to make some music for a lady who was supposed to change musical direction to something a bit rougher compared to her previous material. But as it often goes in the showbiz, nothing but a lot of fiddling around and talk arose from it. Shame, since I managed to write also another song which especially lyric-wise was leaning into the right direction. Maybe it will be heard in one form or another one of these days.

However, the production team of Jani & Jetsetters liked Roviolla, and although the arrangement follows my demo quite closely, you can still hear nicely how the touch and the sound of the band change the end result. This time you really can compare. Pay attention to the out-of-tune mini-Landola on my demo, quite an important element in the end.”

(PS. Tämä biisi ei kuitenkaan kerro siitä.)
---
The fourth album of Teräsbetoni was a nice experience, as there was no tight schedule (it had been a while since our last album) or any other pressures. While, in my opinion, Maailma tarvitsee sankareita is sound-wise closer to ideal, (also) this album suffers slightly of too thin sounds. The bass still leaves me yearning for more, since the guitars are on the surface and at the same time thin, and the bass sound does not fill the empty space. So this song didn't turn out quite I had hoped for. Still I think it is good as a whole and lyrically I managed to take things… well, onward.  There was a point in my life where I had to make a decision of choosing the right direction and move onward like a granny in the snow in a Finnish proverb. I salute Finnish grannies who should be honored as much as the veterans of our wars! (PS. That is not what this song is about.)”

TERÄSBETONI: “UUDESTISYNTYNYT”

”Tämä kappale syntyi oikeasta elämästä, vierestä katsellen. Itse vähän epäilen, että ihminen voisi oikeasti muuttua, mutta kyllä tajuta tekojensa seuraukset - jälkikäteen. Pidän tästä veisusta, vaikka omani onkin.

The inspiration for this song came from real life, from an outsider's point of view. I doubt whether a person can change for real, but it is possible to realize the consequences of one's actions - afterwards. I like this song, although it is one of my own.”

---
This song almost created itself. I had a feeling that we needed a ballad to our album, and so I wrote Metallisydän quite fast one night. I like the harmony of the verse, as Antti Mäkelä had just taught me the "Lynne" chord, ha. And of course I had to put my new knowledge to use right away! I think it was Pekka Ruuska who once said that the demo for this song was better than the version that found its way to the album. Who knows, but I think at least the joy of making music can be felt better there. Actually I think I should dig out the demo from somewhere and listen to it once again, it has been a while since the last time.”

Yesterday, in the evening, I felt this urge to do something special for you. It's Xmas, you know! So, what else than switch the power to your laptop and get to work! First I had to get the idea what to do. Or actually how to utilize the video material that is kinda dull and pointless.
I decided that you can get a bit cheesy...It's Xmas, you know! Did I say that already? So, here you go: Silent Night and some narration at the beginning. Merry Christmas everyone and thank you for this ye...oh well, check out the video! ;)”
